Welcome!
WELCOME to Alaska, ‘the last frontier’, the place of big, open landscapes, splendid mountains, pristine lakes, rushing rivers, and diverse people. Although many Alaskan Native cultures have occupied this land for centuries, the state of Alaska is young (1959) and the land geologically new! Like the land that continues to grow and change, we too are a growing and changing people.
- We have a varied and colorful history full of challenges and successes that help point the way into the future.
- We stand fully in the present evaluating how best to acknowledge and utilize our potential.
- We look to the future and ask how we can expand our capability while preserving what we value.
- We welcome you in this time of robust growth and change tempered by respect for the past, love of natural resources, and hope for an evolving future.
South Central Alaska holds over half the population of the State of Alaska, and includes our largest urban area, the Greater Anchorage Metropolitan Area. (pop 359,180). Travel from Homer to Anchorage by air, car or bus. You can fly from Anchorage to Homer. Car rental is available in both Anchorage and Homer. We have also chartered a luxury bus from Anchorage to Homer, which will include many stops for sightseeing as well as entry into the AK Wildlife Conservation Center where you can view bear, moose, caribou, bison and other Alaskan wildlife.
The route from Anchorage to Homer is one of the most beautiful drives in the State and provides many opportunities for wildlife viewing as well as spectacular and varied landscapes. You will begin near sea level in Anchorage, travel around Turnagain Arm with its incredible bore tides, climb over Turnagain Pass in high mountain meadows, follow the meanders of the turquoise-colored Kenai River, then drop to the coastal area again as you enter the central Kenai Peninsula. The roads are excellent, food and gas are available along the way as well as pull-off areas for photography or historic markers. It is a three to four hour ride from Anchorage to the twin cities of Soldotna & Kenai where you will find both familiar and unique choices for shopping and eating. In Soldotna you are only 80 miles to Homer, and your lodging on the Homer Spit. As you drive from Soldotna to Homer, on a clear day you might see one of our active volcanoes.
A full agenda in an outstanding and historic setting awaits you at the Lands End Resort in Homer, AK. Additionally, we are pleased to announce that the National Association of RC&D Councils will be holding their meeting at the Lands End Resort in Homer, AK directly following the Pac Rim Conference.
